Body

The Emerald Literati Awards celebrate and reward outstanding contributions of authors to Emerald’s publications and to the body of knowledge itself. The criteria for receiving the award include the creation of real change, the excellent structure of the publication and the presentation of new information in the field of research. Dr. Ascenção and Dr. Moilanen were awarded in the Outstanding Paper series. Their publication “Emotions as core building blocks of an experience” was produced in collaboration with researchers from Breda University of Applied Sciences and Manchester Metropolitan University.

The award-winning publication focuses on measuring experiences through emotions, and it contributes to a deeper understanding of how consumers experience offerings in the hospitality, tourism and leisure industry by unpacking memorable experiences into their fundamental element – emotions. The paper advocates that rather than focusing on the predominantly cognitive elements (attention, involvement, engagement and immersion), it is the affective element of an experience − the succession of positive and negative emotions that occur during an experiential episode − that defines its memorability. Then, it discusses the various methodologies to measure experiences whilst providing a fruitful methodological approach, to measuring experiences in real time, that focuses on the bodily expression of emotions (facial coding, physiology and EEG).

This study is related to HH’s LAB8 and eCom Lab on-going effort to measure experiences using biometric sensors that provide different human insight; such as Eye Tracking, EDA/GSR, EEG, ECG and Facial Expression Analysis.
