Publicly funded research, development, and innovation work enhances your company’s competitiveness by providing new expertise, knowledge, and networks. In publicly funded research and development projects, new operating models, services, or solutions can be created and tested within companies. Haaga-Helia is a professional in stakeholder relations and can help you find an effective project consortium from your company’s local or international operational environment.

Work is often carried out within national or international networks of higher education institutions and companies. Projects also result in publications and theses. Projects typically last from 1 to 3 years.

The primary funding comes from public sources (such as Business Finland, ELY Centers, and various EU funding sources), but the funder can also involve companies in projects with their own financial contributions.

In co-funded RDI work, a company develops its expertise, processes, or business according to its needs together with other companies and Haaga-Helia. A co-funded research or development project is a more flexible option in terms of timing and content for collaboration compared to a publicly funded project. In this mode of operation, the parties involved can agree on timelines as well as the contents and goals of the activities. Often, co-funded projects last from 6 months to 3 years.

Participating companies learn a lot in this project format both through working with the university of applied sciences and also from each other – often, companies from different sectors face similar challenges, and by sharing experiences and developing together, innovative and functional solutions are created.

R&D assignments provide solutions to the current needs of the business. The outcome of the work can be, for example, a business plan, a revised process, or the ability to leverage new technologies in business. Company-funded R&D assignments usually last 0–9 months. Projects can vary in size and content: 

1. Company-funded R&D project

In an R&D project, the company develops, for example, its own expertise, processes, or business in collaboration with experts from Haaga-Helia. Projects can vary widely in scope, duration, and content.

2. Expert in the company's organization

In this model, Haaga-Helia offers a research, development, and innovation professional to develop the organisation's operations for a defined period of time. The work is agreed upon well in advance, and goals and timelines are established together. Typically, the duration of the work is 2 months. The work can be full-time or part-time and can take place in multiple locations, either at the company's premises or at Haaga-Helia's facilities, according to the agreement. The work is carried out in Finland.

3. Market research and trend reports

With market research, your organisation can enhance customer or employee understanding, assess brand strength, or map out staff competencies.

4. Assignment for a study module

In student projects, students from Haaga-Helia carry out assignments received from companies under the guidance of teachers, which can be of any size. We primarily work in Finnish, Swedish, and English. Collaboration in the study modules provides your organization with the opportunity to develop new solutions and identify opportunities. Through collaboration, your organisation may also find a valuable new employee for a long-term employment relationship.
