APPLY NOW: Ulysseus Summer course "Cityscapes: Design, Architecture and Tourism Landscapes"
Bachelor’s and Master’s students are invited to apply for a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) organised by Ulysseus European University, taking place from August 25 to 29, 2025, at Haaga-Helia.
Body
As part of Ulysseus European University, Haaga-Helia is organising a 3-ECTS course on ‘Cityscapes: Design, Architecture and Tourism Landscapes’ from August 25 to August 29, 2025, at Pasila Campus.
The course will be led by an international team of experts from Haaga-Helia and Ulysseus partner universities. It will follow the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) format, combining a virtual seminar in June with a one-week, in-person series of intensive workshops in August.
This international course provides a valuable opportunity to critically explore our relationship with tourism, travel, and hospitality, alongside the theoretical frameworks that inform design, architecture, landscape, and place-making.
In Finland, design is a part of national decision making. Design and architecture have been central elements in the development of a 21st Century Helsinki, the capital of Finland and the happiest place in the world for seven consecutive years. In this course, participants will learn about interplay between design, architecture, and tourism landscapes while designing ephemeral cityscapes in the context of the Experience Economy.
APPLICATION IS OPEN UNTIL 19.5.2025
To apply, please submit a motivation e-mail/letter (100-300 words) to [email protected].
A total of 8 students from Haaga-Helia will be selected to participate in the course and will be joined by students from other Ulysseus partner universities (e.g. Universidad de Sevilla and Università degli Studi di Genova).
Selection will be based on academic performance, academic progress, the relevance of the applicant’s degree programme, and the content of the motivation letter.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Following this course, participants will be able to:
- Understanding landscape and place-making theories to interpret the cultural, historical, and aesthetic dimensions of city tourism scapes.
- Apply theories of the experience economy and their relevance to designing meaningful city tourism experiences.
- Employ the design thinking process to collaboratively develop innovative architectural and/or design intervention (concept) for a city tourism scape.
- Communicate design and/or architectural concepts to both academic and professional audiences.
- Reflect on personal contribution and team dynamics during the design process to improve future collaborative practices.
The virtual seminar will take place on June 3, 2025, via Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
