Sustainable Tourism and Event Management studies include work placements, and the total scope of these placements is 30 credits. The work placements are divided into Basic Work Placement and 2 sets of Professional Work Placements. You’ll find the placement objectives and other information about both Basic Work Placement and Professional Work Placement in the Study Guide.
The scope of the Basic Work Placement is 10 credits and it corresponds to 270 hours of work. Both Professional Work Placements entail 10 credits, each corresponding to 270 hours of work.
Basic Work Placement
Basic Work Placement is completed during the first year of studies. If you are doing full-time studies, the Basic Work Placement is carried out in the Autumn semester, during period 2. It’s recommended that the Professional Work Placement is done after the Basic Work Placement, while studying the professional competencies in the curriculum. Your Guidance Counsellor supervises Basic Work Placement and Monika Birkle (Event Management) and Niina Moilanen (Tourism Management) Professional Work Placements.
Your Guidance Counsellor will tell you more about work placements during the Introduction to Studies course in the first semester.
It is recommended that you carry out the Basic Work Placement in the accommodation, restaurant, tourism, or events industry because this way you’ll gain experience of the tasks and jobs in your field of study, which is valuable when choosing your major. In addition, you will improve your chances of getting a meaningful job or internship position for your next work placement.
If you have previous work, on-the-job learning, and/or internship experience in the industry, you can demonstrate the skills required in the Basic Work Placement through the Demonstration of Prior Learning procedure. You should contact your Guidance Counsellor to discuss this option.
Professional Work Placement
Professional Work Placements are carried out after the Basic Work Placement while studying professional competencies and studies included in your major. The first Professional Work Placement can be completed during the summer between the first and second year of study, during the second year of study, or at the latest after the second year of study, before the start of the third year. The Second Professional Work Placement is completed after the third year of study at the latest. Professional Work Placements support your career plan and strengthen your expertise in your field. The objective is that Professional Work Placements are carried out in jobs that correspond to and at least support the studies of your major.
For more information about carrying out the Professional Work Placement and writing the placement reports, please contact your Competence Counselling teachers Monika Birkle or Niina Moilanen. When it’s time, don’t forget to register for Professional Work Placement in Peppi!
If you already have a job corresponding to your major, you can complete the Professional Work Placements through the Demonstration of Prior Learning procedure. For more information, please contact your Competence Counselling teacher.
