Studying at Open University of Applied Sciences

Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences is intended for everyone regardless of age and basic education. You can take part in individual courses or you can complete study modules which consist of multiple courses. Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences studies are for you if you are planning to complete a Bachelor’s degree, want to develop your working skills, are planning a new career, want to improve your basic knowledge or language skills.

At Haaga-Helia Open University of Applied Sciences, you cannot complete a degree, but if you accomplish a minimum of 60 credits of the degree programme you are interested in, you can apply for admission as a degree student through the Open Path. Open Path applicants do not have to take part in the entrance examination.

The scope of the courses is expressed in credits (ECTS). One credit point equals 27 hours of studying. Bachelor’s degree is usually 210 credits. For full-time students, the recommended amount of credits per academic year is about 60. This can be accomplished also in the Haaga-Helia Open UAS.

Note also that Open University studies are non-degree studies and a visa or residence permit is not granted solely based on these studies, which are not directly leading to a degree. Therefore you are not also eligible for the state’s student financial aid or student discounts.

At Peppi-system, you can view your completed courses and grades. You can also print out your study transcript as well as your student certificate.

In Haaga-Helia Open UAS studies, practice and working life meet. Students are responsible for their learning, teachers and counselors are there to support students in their studies. You can take part in classroom teaching or complete studies online. If you have already acquired skills and knowledge from work or studies, you can complete the course by demonstrating your skills.

Courses with contact teaching are usually arranged during a specified time period, once or twice a week. Intensive courses refer to courses in which teaching takes place only during an intensive period (see the academic year schedule).

You can also participate in an online course in which the entire course is carried out in the electronic learning environment Moodle. If such a virtual course includes a meeting or an exam on Haaga-Helia premises, this is indicated in the course schedule. Virtual courses require as much work as courses with contact teaching. In virtual courses, students can plan their work according to their own schedules.

If you have acquired skills and knowledge required in a course at work, at school, or in your free time, you can demonstrate your skills with:

• an evaluative essay of your own competence
• a knowledge-based diary
• an employer's certificate / a recommendation
• an interview
• an exam
• a skills test
• a project
• an oral assessment
• an expert lecture
• a written summary of the non-formal education and experience

Skills demonstrations will be evaluated with the same criteria and scale as any other studies. If you don't pass, you can take part in the course.

We have the same requirements for Open UAS studies as for degree studies. Courses are assessed according to Haaga-Helia's practices. Grades are assessed on the following scale: excellent (5), very good (4), good (3), satisfactory (2), weak (1) and fail (0). Some courses are evaluated as pass/fail. Course grades are available in Peppi three weeks after the completion of the course.

At the end of the course, you often need to take an exam. You do not need to register for such an exam. The student has the right to retake the exam twice, on specified exam days.  You need to register for the re-examinations. This does not apply to demonstrations, project works or other one-off learning situations.

Students’ written coursework is kept on file for six months after the publication of the grades. Incomplete coursework has to be completed during the six months unless otherwise agreed with the teacher.

Cheating during studies in the Open University of Applied Sciences is forbidden and can lead to rejection of the applicant’s application for degree studies through the Open Path.

In Peppi you can view grades, and print your transcript of records.

Moodle 

Moodle is Haaga-Helia's electronic learning environment and platform, where each course has its own page. Moodle is a document database and a discussion area. 

E-mail

A personal email address will be automatically created for each new Haaga-Helia student. The address will be firstname.lastname @ myy.haaga-helia.fi or User-ID @ myy.haaga-helia.fi. Haaga-Helia sends all emails to this address. You can use Office 365 for accessing your mail (address https://mymail.haaga-helia.fi) or the link can be found also on Haaga-Helia main page -> Quick links.

Logging in to Office 365 email

Type to User Name prompt: your domain username, e.g. [email protected] (xx are letters and 123 is a 3-digit number)

Type to Password prompt: your domain password, this is the same that you type when login in to a computer at school.

If you like to use another mail address (e.g. Gmail), you have to re-direct your Haaga-Helia mail.

Redirecting email from Office 365

• Log in to Office 365 and open the Mail application
• Open Settings (cogwheel in the upper right corner) and choose Options
• From the left menu open Mail > Accounts > Forwarding
• Write your preferred email address in the text box below Start forwarding and click Save

Zoom and Teams

Online learning platforms mentioned below can be used in the course. In the description of the implementation, it is stated if the Study Course uses one of the mentioned learning platforms.
