According to a National Agency for Education in Finland report (2019), sustainability is by far the most important generic skill needed in future work. Sustainable principles are, however, rarely linked or aligned in Central Baltic business vocational education, even though sustainability is a key topic within finance associations. It should be advanced in vocational business education, and not only from an ecological viewpoint, but also ethical.
Sustainability in Finance (SuFi) project matches the employment demand. The project will be executed in cooperation with two vocational institutions and three other universities of applied sciences in Baltic region. Associated partners such as Ålandsbanken, Finance Finland and Finance Latvia bring input to the project through finance competence expertise and by defining future competence needs together with students and teachers.
The project started in order to enhance competitiveness, work opportunities and mobility, and to enhance new required competences among business graduates in the Central Baltic region. The Sustainability in Finance project aims at accelerating and aligning vocational business/finance education with Sustainable Development Goals and sustainability principles, i.e. with generic new competence needs with focus on quality and alignment in business education.
The ultimate project outcome is an online finance module (15 ECTS) with sustainability content that will be taken into use by all partner schools, and will be available for all on an open online educational material platform. The SuFi module will be tested, piloted and developed jointly by all partner institutions.
In addition to Haaga-Helia, schools participating in the project are Vocational education and training center "Liepajas State Technical school" (Latvia), University of Latvia, Tartu VEC and University of Tartu (Estonia) and Högskolan på Åland.
