First step into working life already during studies

Leinonen studied for a Bachelor of Hospitality Management at Haaga-Helia’s Porvoo campus, specializing in event services. Her studies began in autumn 2022, and she secured a job early on.

– I applied to Eckerö Line at the beginning of 2023, so quite early in my studies, says Leinonen.

The idea of working on a ship had been on her mind for some time. The decisive moment came at the Duuniin.net recruitment event held at Haaga-Helia’s Pasila campus.

– I had planned to apply as a children’s activity instructor on a ship. At the event, I spoke with Eckerö Line’s cruise host, Simopekka Silventola. He gave me a tip about an upcoming job opening, and I decided to seize the opportunity, Leinonen says.

That encounter led to a job interview and eventually a new position at Eckerö Line.

– I even won a gift card at the event, so the day stayed especially memorable, Leinonen adds.

A diverse career built through experience

Leinonen’s career at Eckerö Line began as a children’s activity instructor on m/s Finlandia. The work was initially seasonal, but new opportunities opened up quickly.

– After the first summer, I got the chance to step in as a cruise host and also work in the buffet. I wanted to do more shifts, so I took on different opportunities, Leinonen explains.

She gained experience in various roles, and in autumn 2024, an opportunity opened up to apply for a position as an event coordinator.

– The role matched my specialization well. I applied, got the position, and started at the beginning of 2025, says Leinonen.

She also completed her internship and thesis with the same employer, after which her employment continued on a permanent basis.

Learning is reflected in everyday work

Different roles have helped Leinonen develop her skills in many ways.

– As a children’s instructor, I learned to perform and work with different kinds of people. In the buffet, I learned to work under pressure and as part of a team. As a cruise hostess, I was given responsibility, which increased my confidence, Leinonen says.

In her current role as an event coordinator, she is part of the production team and participates in planning and executing onboard themes and events. She also has a role in the sales team, working alongside the Sales Manager and coordinating large corporate events on board.

– I’ve learned project coordination, communication, and customer service. The work is varied and keeps things interesting, Leinonen explains.

Her studies have also supported her work.

– The emphasis on teamwork and event planning in my studies is directly visible in my daily work, she adds.

A supportive work community fosters development

Leinonen describes Eckerö Line’s work community as approachable.

– My colleagues are friendly, and cooperation runs smoothly. You constantly learn from people with different backgrounds, she says.

Moving to a new team felt natural at Eckerö Line.

– I was warmly welcomed and quickly got involved. Help is always available when needed, and you can share your ideas easily, Leinonen notes.

Looking ahead

At Eckerö Line, Leinonen’s role has expanded with experience, while her academic experience has also grown.

– I’ve been given more responsibility and had the chance to be involved in different projects. At the same time, my professional confidence has increased, she says.

Her goal is to continue developing in the future.

– I want to learn more and gain more experience. Further studies interest me, but for now I’m focusing on my current job, Leinonen concludes.

Message to students

Leinonen encourages students to seize opportunities.

– I can recommend Eckerö Line as an employer. The work is diverse, and the employer listens to employees’ needs, she says.

The work is particularly suitable for those interested in trying different roles.
