Often when talking about studies, the emphasis is on being goal-oriented and planning. These are important elements for the progress of your studies, but it is also good to leave room for more.

When planning you should always take into account the possibility of chance. By coming to campus, for example, you give yourself the chance of an encounter that may spark a new idea in you or lead you down a completely new path. A random smile can brighten up an otherwise lonely day. A coincidence can open the way to a new job or relationship. All it takes to make coincidences possible is to step out of your home or comfort zone from time to time and be open to something new.

To keep the enthusiasm for learning alive, it is worth nurturing the joy of learning - the joy of understanding something new, of understanding more. You can open the meaning of the joy of learning for yourself by asking yourself, for example, when was the last time you learned something new? When was the last time you were happy about your achievement?

Sometimes, talking about chance and the joy of learning can feel a bit too light. We all know that in life there will be different challenges and phases. Our large university community is home to a wide range of learners with a wide range of strengths and personal challenges.

Many of us also need support to overcome challenges: whether it comes from loved ones, fellow students or a professional. But I want to assure you that, regardless of the burdens and diagnoses we carry, we can all make a difference to our own well-being. This is often referred to as perceived well-being or positive mental health.

Enabling coincidences and seeking the joy of learning are concrete tools to enhance our own perceived well-being. They remind us of what a gift it can be to find one's own field or direction and how learning should always be fun!

Wishing you the joy of learning and funny coincidences,

Rosa Weckman
