Haaga-Helia number one in student mobility in 2024

The Finnish National Agency for Education (EduFi) annually compiles statistics on study and internship periods completed abroad by higher education students. In 2024, more students from Haaga-Helia went abroad than from any other university of applied sciences.

In 2024, as many as 315 students from Haaga-Helia went on long-term exchanges, compared to 270 students from Metropolia, the second highest sender. Relative to the size of the university of applied sciences, i.e., the number of new students, Haaga-Helia was also number one in all mobilities, with 19% of our students going abroad. Following were Savonia with 18%, JAMK with 17%, and Metropolia with 16%.

While the short-term mobilities’ popularity is growing, the trend of long-term student exchanges has been declining at Haaga-Helia, as in other universities of applied sciences. However, in the first application round of 2025, more applications were received than in the same round the previous year. We selected 334 students for exchange, slightly more than last year (296). Although long-term student mobility has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels, Haaga-Helia stands out compared to other Finnish higher education institutions.

Our percentage (19%) is also relatively small as we strive towards the goal set for European University Alliances that 50% of students will have a mobility period during their studies by 2030. However, Haaga-Helia clearly exceeded the Ulysseus mobility targets for the academic year 2023-2024, making it safe to say that we are on the right track, but there is still much work to be done.

EduFi statistics include all students who went abroad through exchange programmes as well as those who arranged their own exchange placements. Long-term (at least 3 months) and short-term (less than 3 months) mobility periods are reported separately. According to OPH's statistics, the total number of higher education students who went abroad from Finland in 2024 was 10,599. The majority of these periods abroad were supported by the EU's Erasmus+ program.
