Varpu Rusila: Entrepreneur learns from teacher studies
"Everyone deserves to learn in a way they enjoy," says digital marketing entrepreneur Varpu Rusila, who is studying to become a professional teacher at Haaga-Helia.
Who are you?
I graduated as a Master of Science in Technology from Tampere in 2010 and worked afterwards mainly in the retail sector as a sales representative and specialist. Now I have been working as an entrepreneur for five years, working on Finland's traction and traction through my Her Finland channels and online platform. I live with my family in Lahti, and my favourite hobbies are reading and nature walks.
Why did you choose to study at Haaga-Helia?
I want a teaching qualification for myself, so that I can develop myself and develop my business more smoothly. I teach live, hybrid and online. Everyone deserves to learn in a way they enjoy. I have already gained so much from these studies. Her Finland's online courses are used by more than 15 600 students worldwide.
I took part in Haaga-Helia's Media Business Continuing Education course in 2015 and it was a great experience. The reason why I chose Haaga-Helia was because of this previous experience and the excellent scheduling of the online group - you could see it in advance on the website during the application period. I thought it was a perfect fit for the everyday life of an entrepreneur.
What has it been like to study?
I study online while working full-time. There are two big reasons why I dared to take this approach to my studies. Firstly, there is no big written final project. Secondly, all the learning material I collect is for me and I can return it in the method that works best for me. In fact, I do my own learning portfolio mainly through videos, as it is a quick way for me to communicate the development of my skills. Of course you can write, but it is not compulsory.
Is there anything that surprised you, especially during your studies?
I was thinking beforehand about how hard it is to study while working full-time. It has been really nice to see how it has actually been much easier than I thought. Clear blocks for studying make it efficient.
This is how I manage my studies in practice. I already calendar them in my diary then, as a tight package with the next online day. With the peer group, we always meet after the online meeting, when the brain is ready for the study session. The self-promoted studies progress on the student's terms, which means I'm very good at scheduling them at a time when work isn't busy.
And is there a particular memory from your student days that stands out?
Other students are the greatest thing about this education! We come from very different backgrounds, and you learn so much from listening to other people's experiences and views. There's no shortage of laughter at peer group meetings!
What kind of support do your studies give you for your future and working life?
For me, it's important to get a teaching qualification as a teacher.I also think that my studies will give me a huge boost in terms of job opportunities, for example if I want to work in an educational institution at some point in the future.
Greetings to current or future student teachers?
Don't hesitate to apply! Most of our group plan to graduate in a year, but you can also plan to study for longer.
