The last few weeks have touched many of us. The security situation in Europe has deteriorated and war has entered our living rooms.

The escalating situation in Ukraine is causing us to have different feelings and reactions. As an international university community, it affects us both as individuals and as a community.

Dealing with difficult topics and emotional events in teaching and group situations is challenging. It requires interlocutors not only to accept and respect other people’s experiences but also to ensure that staff members who facilitate teaching or discussion remain calm in the situation.

The teacher has the right to limit the discussion in the classroom both in time and content. Her primary mission is to ensure a safe learning environment for every student.

At the same time, however, it is useful to note that it may be necessary for group dynamics to provide space for the expression of feelings as well, thus strengthening the sense of community of the teaching group.

Haaga-Helia has zero-tolerance for racism and discrimination. If a student encounters inappropriate treatment, they may be directed to contact Helga’s harassment liaison.

The importance of maintaining hope is emphasized in crises.

In the role of the teacher, it is also important to take care of one's own coping. The horrors of war should serve as an invitation to humanity and gentleness — to ourselves and to others.
