Protect yourself from data breaches – guidance available
A data breach is an unauthorised intrusion into an information system containing, for example, personal data. However, a data breach can be prevented and support and assistance is available for victims.
Body
Recent news about data breaches can raise many questions and concerns. For example, the data of Haaga-Helia students is not related to the reported data breach in the field of Childhood and Education in the City of Helsinki and therefore has not been leaked to a criminal party.
Prevent a data breach
The most common way to commit a data breach is to steal login credentials from the user. The most well-known method is phishing. It involves tricking the victim into providing login credentials, for example by using a fake-looking login page that collects user credentials for criminal activity.
To protect yourself from data breaches, you can pay attention to possible phishing attacks. The Center for Cyber Security has put together a comprehensive information package on its website on how to protect yourself against data breaches.
If you are a victim of a data breach
Help and support is available through the crisis helpline, Mieli ry's channels and the City of Helsinki's customer service for victims of data breaches. The police website also has general information for victims of data breaches.
