AI as a Boss: The Role of AI in the Management of Expert and Knowledge-Intensive Work

AI as a Boss: The Role of AI in the Management of Expert and Knowledge-Intensive Work. Anna Lahtinen, Aarni Tuomi, Janne Kauttonen, Johanna Vuori, Martti Asikainen

What happens when artificial intelligence (AI) no longer merely supports work, but begins to take part in managing it? AI as a Boss explores the emerging phenomenon of algorithmic management in knowledge and professional work. The book examines how AI is being used to guide work, support decision-making, evaluate performance, and assist in everyday managerial tasks—and what implications these developments have for employees, workplaces, and organizations.

A Book on the New Era of Algorithms, AI, and Management

Algorithmic management refers to the delegation of decision-making and managerial responsibilities to automated systems, digital tools, or AI. But what happens in the workplace when machines begin to perform tasks traditionally carried out by managers? This question is becoming increasingly relevant for organizations and society alike.

The book is based on research conducted by Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences between 2025 and 2026, exploring the experiences and perspectives of Finnish professionals, supervisors, and executives regarding algorithmic management.

AI-Driven Management Is Already Part of Working Life

According to the study, nearly half of Finnish knowledge workers and experts have encountered algorithmic management in their work.

This book helps readers understand

  • what algorithmic management means in practice
  • where AI can effectively support management and leadership
  • the benefits and risks associated with algorithmic management
  • how trust, transparency, and employee participation influence its acceptance
  • what the future of leadership may look like.

The book was published by Haaga-Helia as part of the RoboBoss project.
