Starting level and linkage with other courses
No prerequisites. Suitable for students with no prior Finnish skills or students who have studied a little bit of Finnish and need to revise the very basics.

Learning outcomes
During the course you will learn the elementary vocabulary and structures of Finnish language needed in routine everyday situations. You have a chance to practice and improve your independent language learning skills and you learn to use the surrounding language environment to improve your Finnish skills. Your target level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR is A1.

Contents

  •  Basic characteristics of Finnish language
  •  Basics of pronunciation
  •  Greetings and key phrases in everyday situations
  •  Numbers and time expressions
  •  Introducing yourself
  •  Verb conjugation, possessive structure and basic questions
  •  Basics of the genitive and partitive case
  •  Basic vocabulary for everyday needs

Course formats
Virtual course. Independent online studies (using Moodle platform). Self-study materials, learning videos, online exercises, weekly assignments and online exam.

Assessment
Students' performance is graded on the following scale: Excellent (5), Very good (4), Good (3), Satisfactory (2), Fair (1), Fail (0). Active self-study and weekly learning assignments (including assessment of one’s own learning and feedback) 40 %, online exam 60 %.
