Description of the module

This is the second project module of Global Markets and Trade specialization. The student will work and learn in a real-life assignment on the internationalization efforts of an SME. The assignments may vary between companies and in time but the key elements are relatively constant. The module is interchangeable with two courses from the Degree Programme in International Business offering, namely, “Strategic Sourcing” 5cr and “Developing SCM” 5cr. The key learning outcomes from the core module and the first project module will equally be applied to the project in this further module.

This course description will be modified into an implementation plan for each implementation separately. The implementation plans will then be modified based on student feedback in accordance with the Haaga-Helia quality system.

 

Starting level and linkage with other courses

The student has successfully completed the Basic Studies and the Joint Professional Studies, the core module, The Foundations of Growing a Global Business GLO3LH101 of the specialization module Global Markets and Trade and the module International Business Practicalities GLO4LH101. It is recommended that the student takes all three further specialization modules, including this, to be able to deliver value to the commissioning company.

 

Learning objectives and assessment

Competence level 1-2

  • A student can build an elementary internationalization plan based on the market study and is able to choose a mode of internationalization, find partners and make risk analyses with a partial degree of professionalism. 
  • The student can partially identify possible problems, risks and development areas in different supply chains.
  • The student has some basic skills to measure key performance (KPIs) and other supply chain indicators.  
  • The student partially understands the various roles of purchasing and supply management in achieving strategic success.
  • The student partially knows the strategic importance of supplier development to add value to international business partnerships.
  • The student can choose and apply appropriate sourcing strategies to a limited extent to different commodities, services and suppliers including the use of information technology.
  • The student assumes partial responsibility for the client project including communication with the client, alterations to the project based on client demands, incorporating client needs in the project and reporting to the client
  • The student can partially use professional project management tools and skills.

 

Competence level 3-4

  • A student can build a holistic internationalization plan based on the market study and is able to choose a proper mode of internationalization, find partners and make risk analyses. 
  • The student can identify possible problems, risks and development areas in different supply chains.
  • The student has the skills to measure key performance (KPIs) and other supply chain indicators.  
  • The student understands the various roles of purchasing and supply management in achieving strategic success.
  • The student knows the strategic importance of supplier development to add value to international business partnerships.
  • The student can choose and apply appropriate sourcing strategies to different commodities, services and suppliers including the use of information technology.
  • The student assumes professional responsibility for the client project including communication with the client, alterations to the project based on client demands, incorporating client needs in the project and reporting to the client
  • The student can use professional project management tools and skills and can skillfully manage the project keeping it on schedule and on target.

 

Competence level 5

  • A student can build a professional holistic internationalization plan based on the market study and is fully able to choose a proper mode of internationalization, find partners and make risk analyses. 
  • The student can skillfully identify possible problems, risks and development areas in different supply chains.
  • The student has the skills to measure key performance (KPIs) and other supply chain indicators.  
  • The student fully understands the various roles of purchasing and supply management in achieving strategic success.
  • The student fully knows the strategic importance of supplier development to add value to international business partnerships.
  • The student can skillfully choose and apply appropriate sourcing strategies to different commodities, services and suppliers including the use of information technology.
  • The student assumes full professional responsibility for the client project including communication with the client, alterations to the project based on client demands, incorporating client needs in the project and reporting to the client
  • The student can skillfully use professional project management tools and skills and can skillfully manage the project keeping it on schedule and on target.

 

Recognising and validating prior learning (RPL)

If students have acquired the required competence in previous work tasks, recreational activities or on another course, they can show the competence with a demonstration and progress faster through their studies. More information and instructions for recognising and validating prior learning (RPL) are available on MyNet.

 

Cooperation with the business community

The entire module is undertaken as an assignment to a real-life company; and done as a team in the internationalisation lab of Haaga-Helia.

 

Internationality

The course is taught in English, can be attended by international exchange students and all assignments are related to the internationalisation efforts of a company. The course is international by definition. Students from the Degree Programme of International Business are encouraged to take this module and thus increase the international student population of the course.

 

Timetable

The schedule is introduced in detail in each implementation plan.

Learning methods.
Students will work in teams to implement a real life client project related to the internationalisation efforts of an SME as part of this module. In the client project, students will practice and develop their skills and knowledge in the tools and methods relevant to consulting SMEs on internationalisation topics. Students are expected to assume entrepreneurial responsibility for the client projects from start to finish. Teachers will act as coaches in the student's learning processes.

 

Assessment

The module requires strong and goal-oriented commitment on behalf of the student to team work and the contact sessions in the module. The grade will be based partly on the output and the value of the project deliverables to the client company (50%) and partly on the students own commitment, activity and demonstrated professional attitude (50%).
