Funding your exchange studies

• Your student exchange lasts 2 to 12 months
• You will complete 30 credits in exchange 
• Courses must be accepted as part of the Haaga-Helia degree (Learning Agreement) 
• You will return the required documents after the exchange (After Mobility Form, Student Exchange Travel Report)

The amount of the Erasmus+ grant depends on the duration of the exchange and the country of destination. 

Grant is paid for the time period during which students must be present at the host university. The duration of the exchange includes the orientation organised by the host university, course teaching, and the first examinations that immediately follow the teaching. As the length of your stay defines the amount of your total grant it is important to check the dates carefully when you apply for the grant. 

Upon completion of the exchange, the actual duration of your exchange will be verified from the Letter of Confirmation. If the duration has been shorter or longer than planned, the amount of the grant will be recalculated. 

The minimum duration of an Erasmus+ exchange is two months (60 days), except for host institutions in the United Kingdom where the minimum duration is three months (90 days). If the actual duration of your exchange is less than the minimum duration, the exchange will be considered canceled and the full grant will be refunded. 

The destination countries are divided into two categories based on the level of expenses of the countries.

To receive a grant, an application must be submitted by the end of the application round. Unsent applications will not be processed.

The grant is paid in two installments: 

• 1st installment, 80% of the total amount: before your exchange or during your stay. 
• 2nd installment 20% of the total amount: once you have returned all the required documents to your international affairs specialist, the credit transfers have been completed and you have replied to the EU-Survey sent to your e-mail. 

It can take about a month to process all the submitted documents and confirm the payment of the grant. Scholarships are paid on the 15th of each month.  

Note! Except for the summer vacation season!

Students who have fewer opportunities to participate in a student exchange and who belong to nationally defined groups can receive a fixed individual support increase of €250 to their normal Erasmus+ grant:

Social obstacles:

• Students with families (children under 18)
• Acting as a family carer (agreement on family care with the municipality)

Migrant background:

• Students who have received international protection (refugees, asylum seekers, those who have received international, temporary or secondary protection, or the student has a refugee travel document)

Disabilities:

• Students with an EU disability card, or the right to it
• Disabled and functionally impaired (at least moderate functional impairment*)

Health obstacles:

• Suffering from serious and/or chronic health problems (at least moderate functional impairment*)

*Moderate functional impairment (disability categories 6—10)

The person is not capable of activities that require constant precision and concentration. The treatment of the disease causes stress and takes time every day, and neglecting the treatment causes a danger to the state of health.

If you choose a more green way to travel to destination, you may receive:

• 50€ /mobility
• A maximum of 4 additional travel days

Entitlement to Green Travel Support: Green Travel form and, if necessary, the university may also request travel receipts.

Haaga-Helia has many bilateral agreements with partner universities, usually located outside Europe, such as Asia, Oceania, and North, Central, and South America. 

The amount of the grant for the academic year 2023/24

1100 euros/exchange 

The Nordplus programme is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and supports student exchanges between the Nordic and Baltic countries. 

Haaga-Helia currently has partners in the Nordplus network in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Students participating in student exchanges at these institutions can receive a grant from the Nordplus programme. The principles of Nordplus are similar to those of Erasmus. Before leaving for the exchange, the student must have completed the first year of studies. 

The Nordplus grant consists of two parts: a travel grant and an individual grant. 

Nordplus grant for the academic year 2023/24

Travel support:

• Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Åland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania: 330 euros / exchange 
• Iceland: 660 euros / exchange 

Individual support:

• 200 euros / month 

Haaga-Helia's degree students can apply for a Free Mover scholarship to an exchange destination that is self-procured by the students and is not Haaga-Helia's partner university.  

Free mover grants for the academic year 2023/24

• Nordic and Baltic countries: EUR 150 / exchange 
• Russia and other intra-European destinations: EUR 300 / exchange 
• Non-European destinations: EUR 500 /exchange

Grants must be applied for through the Outgoing Freemover Grant application. You must log in to the MoveOn portal and select the Outgoing Freemover Grant application (Be sure to check the technical instructions before completing the application). 

 
Free mover - general instructions for exchange 

• The scholarship is paid at the beginning of the semester. The grant will not be awarded or paid retrospectively. 
• However, your grant will not be paid to your account until you have submitted a copy of an official letter of acceptance to your International Affairs Specialist. 
• Please note that you are still eligible to apply for a grant even if you have not received official confirmation from the host university in May for the Autumn semester / October for the spring semester. 
• You can get the free mover grant only once. 
• If you do not submit any copy of an official letter of acceptance, your grant will be cancelled. 
• After the exchange, you have to submit a student exchange report to the International services.

In addition to the exchange grant, the student may receive additional financial support to participate in an international exchange. Accessibility support is available in several programs of the National Board of Education, such as Erasmus +, Nordplus and TFK. 

Accessibility or inclusion support is intended to enable exchanges where a specific need imposes additional costs on the exchange period which cannot be supported elsewhere. A special need may be due to a disability, mental or physical illness, learning disability, personal situation or other similar reason. 

It is advisable for the person leaving for the exchange and the home university to start preparations well in advance, but no later than 6 months before departure. In addition to applying for support, it can take time to obtain information and ensure special arrangements at the exchange destination. 

The application period is continuous. The application is applied for using the application form, which can be found on the National Board of Education's website: https://www.oph.fi/fi/ohjelmat/esteettomyys-ja-osallisuustuki-korkeakoulujen-kansainvalisessa-liikkuvuudessa The applicant fills in their own share of the form and the sending university its own share. The university submits the application to the National Board of Education. 

The Board of Education grants the grant to the university, which continues to pay it to the applicant participating in the exchange.
