HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences organised an IBM System z Basics intensive course together with IBM in Finland at the end of May. The course was a basic-level course based on Introduction to System z Mini-Boot Camp material. The course explored the z/OS operating system. After the course, students had the opportunity to pass IBM’s System z Mastery Test.

A meeting with students and company representatives was organised at the end of the course. The event provided the students with an opportunity to create connections with the company representatives and discuss work placement opportunities, for example.

“Based on feedback, students were highly satisfied with the course contents,” says Pekka Jaskara, teacher of the course.

The course was very popular: there were many more interested students than available places. The course will be offered to students again next autumn, but it will be implemented in a self-study format based on the IBM materials.

HAAGA-HELIA co-operates actively with companies

HAAGA-HELIA co-operates actively with several companies, IBM among others. HAAGA-HELIA’s teachers in the Degree Programme in Information Technology can visit IBM during the eight-week work placement; and IBM experts give lectures at HAAGA-HELIA. Approximately 10,000 students study at the HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences and some 1,600 of them are studying information technology. Information technology programmes are provided in both Finnish and English.

HAAGA-HELIA is a strongly international university: just the information technology students represent 52 different nationalities. In the autumn of 2012, the information technology study opportunities will expand with an English-language Master programme.
