HAAGA-HELIA´s Staff Week Brought Together Professionals from 26 Universities

International Services arranged HAAGA-HELIA’s first Staff Exchange Week on 22 - 26 April for our European partner universities’ staff members. Over 30 participants from 13 different countries and 26 partner universities participated in the event. The week’s theme was time management.

In addition to the International Services’ operation, the participants had a chance to familiarize themselves with the operation of our other Administrative and Educational Support Services. The event was also a good opportunity for the participants to network with HAAGA-HELIA’s and other partner organizations’ staff members, as well as share experiences and good practices. The participants were very pleased with the theme of the week as well as the contents and the practical arrangements.

Friederike Nehls, from Hamburg School of Business Administration, Germany, was one of the participants.

“Our school has a very lively connection with HAAGA-HELIA,” describes Nehls. “We always have students coming on exchange from here and vice versa.”

For Friederike, the fact that HAAGA-HELIA students have to complete work experience in order to fulfil the requirements of their degree programme was impressive.

Sofia Nunes, from Universidade do Algarve, Portugal, felt that participating in the HAAGA-HELIA international staff week was a unique opportunity to get to know their partner university.

“We communicate daily by e-mail and phone, but we never actually meet,” she states. “It’s completely different to talk face to face.”

Sofia admires, that at HAAGA-HELIA students find their own pathway to work, and the fact that teachers are only mentoring them. In addition, she says that HAAGA-HELIA has a very professional training system. Sofia also enjoyed very positive experiences in relation to Finnish culture.

“On the first day we were told that Finnish people are not very talkative”, she recalls. “I have to disagree with this. Everyone from HAAGA-HELIA who has participated in the staff week has been so warm and friendly!”

Business Challenges in International Context 18–22 March 2013

International Week on Sales and Service Management brought international guests to HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences last week. Out of the 23 students who participated in the course, 11 came from Belgium and Germany and 12 from Finland. In addition, HAAGA-HELIA was proud to host four visiting lecturers: Ali Alisha from Sheffield Hallam University (GB), Myriam Willaert from HOWEST, Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen (Belgium), René Sturing from Avans Hogeschool (Holland) and Federica Giordani from Università degli Studi di Roma 'La Sapienza' (Italy).

In the previous years, the theme of HAAGA-HELIA’s International Week has been connected to marketing communication and corporate responsibility. This year, the theme was focused more on HAAGA HELIA’s service and sales strategy.

Student Bob Van Reeth from Thomas More Mechelen University (Belgium) was satisfied with the week. "It was great to combine both theoretic lessons and real company cases. Wednesday afternoon's outdoor activities by the seaside were also something to be remembered, especially the ‘Nokia throw’”, he laughs.

Visiting Lecturer Myriam Willaert was also happy: "The students consider this really interesting. An important thing is that they have to speak a foreign language the whole time.” HOWEST also organizes a similar intensive course once a year.

International Week was arranged for the first time in 1999. "We invited our partner schools to participate in our International Week, which was known as Winter School. We wanted to show our partners how things run perfectly smoothly in Finland even in winter. Snow does not mean chaos here", says Marja-Riitta Eriksson, Degree Programme Director in International Business. "It is also very important to bring the world to HAAGA HELIA and increase international cooperation that way”, describes Ms Eriksson.

The Fulbright-HAAGA-HELIA Scholar Award 2014–2015 application now open

The Fulbright-HAAGA-HELIA Scholar Award enables American scholars to undertake teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level at HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences for a period of 3 - 10 months. The application period for the academic year 2014 - 2015 begins February 1, 2013 and ends August 1, 2013.

The award can be applied by scholars of any field represented at HAAGA-HELIA. HAAGA-HELIA focuses on service, sales and entrepreneurship, and appreciates expertise and/or professional experience in the field of service business management and development.

Call for Papers: International GBATA-conference 2013

HAAGA-HELIA is hosting an international GBATA-conference on July 2 - 6, 2013.
Some 250 - 300 delegates from 40 countries are expected to attend this event.

This is an excellent opportunity to engage with colleagues from around the world and to present papers/abstracts (*Finnish / English language). Business scholars will join together to network, present papers, attend plenary presentations, case studies, round tables, panels, workshops and forums. The accepted papers will be published in the Refereed Conference Readings Book (*English).

Deadline for receipt of papers and abstracts is March 31st, 2013.

HAAGA-HELIA's theme groups provide guidance and peer support

We have at HAAGA-HELIA some 20 different theme groups focusing on a variety of Bachelor’s degree thesis topics. The theme groups bring together students working on similar topics, providing them with guidance and peer support. Any student is welcome to join in, regardless of the student’s field of education.

HAAGA-HELIA’s students won the FISKARS POP-UP CAFÉ Competition

Fiskars company in Arabiaranta, Helsinki, organised the 26th of October 2012 a competition for the best pop-up cafè in order to activate its employees to use the communal space and not spend too much time in their offices or meeting rooms.

Competitors were students from various universities of applied sciences in Helsinki area, among them, the team of the Degree Programme in Experience and Wellness Management from HAAGA-HELIA.

HAAGA-HELIA’S winning team came up with a themed pop-up café called "The Old Barn Café", a country-style café offering home-made pies and cakes in a rustic atmosphere.

- We wanted our guests feel cosy and relaxed, and spend as much time with us as possible. The event served its purpose, as nearly 200 guests stopped by alone, with colleagues or as a team and spent their lunch break with us in the Fiskars lounge, says Ivika Hirs, the member of the winning team.

International students will represent HAAGA-HELIA at MATKA 2013 Travel Fair

For the 11th time in a row international tourism students of HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences will participate in the biggest tourism event in the Nordic countries, MATKA 2013 Nordic Travel Fair. The fair is held in Helsinki Exhibition & Convention Centre from January 17th to 20th 2013.

This year the students are arranging an event for former alumni of HAAGA-HELIA. The event will be held on Friday 18th January from 5pm to 7 pm at HAAGA-HELIA’s stand (stand 7G19).

HAAGA-HELIA will also be represented at the Business Travel Forum (6BTF31) on Thursday 17th. The students have created a questionnaire about business travel visitors’ expectations of the future employees’ strengths and skills. The answers collected during the Fair will then be compared to the answers given by the students themselves.

This year the students’ organisational work has been made available through a Facebook page created for the stand. The page has been updated regularly with information about the progress. There has also been a competition that offered a chance for the site visitors to win entrance tickets to the Fair.

Course themes: Service culture across the borders, Business models innovations (Customer insight + Human and technology issues in services) and Marketing communication for services

Course Concept:

Daily workshops on 18–22 March 2013 at 9–17

Programme:

A detailed programme will be published in the beginning of 2013.

Tuition, including interactive lectures, group assignments and a case competition, will be organized Mon-Fri at approx. 9am-4pm.
Before arrival students will be given a pre-assignment to prepare for the course.
Social programme will be included as well.
The course is worth 3 ECTS credits.

Cooperation Event for HAAGA-HELIA Marketing programme & Partner Companies 28.11.2012

On Wednesday 28 November, marketing students and teachers and representatives of partner companies of HAAGA-HELIA converged at Pasila campus to network and discuss co-operation possibilities.

Companies including Miele, Eilakaisla, Telia-Sonera, Mielenrauha and Q-VIO Branding were invited to present their views on partnership and co-operation with HAAGA-HELIA, as well as to discuss career possibilities for students. The event offered a good opportunity for the students to ask about internships, thesis topics and tips for job hunt. In addition, HAAGA-HELIA marketing teachers explored new ideas on company co-operation based on the experiences and wishes of companies and students.

According to the participants´ feedback the networking event should take place again since the attendees regarded the event as useful and interesting. The event was organised by the course “Successful Event” in cooperation with Sinikka Lieto and Marko Mäki, the teachers in charge of company partnerships within marketing studies at HAAGA-HELIA. In sum, the event was valuable for every stakeholder.

Art-in-Science and Business at Pasila Campus on 3rd December

How to make Art and Business out of Science? How to apply Inquiry Learning Method in creative processes? How 10-year-old students study complex material on a dissertation level?

During the Art-in-Science and Business Project, students at various ages studied Minna Saarinen`s dissertation on “normality”, inclusion and exclusion through experimental drama and dramaturgy.

A fragmented video based on the training sessions has been edited as a part of our performance. In the video, “abnormal presence” in classrooms or, for example, in an advertising agency will be made explicit.

Closing Ceremony for World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 by HAAGA-HELIA

World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 will be closed by HAAGA-HELIA’s international students in an open door event at the end of November. The event presents the five HAAGA-HELIA projects which participated in the WDC Helsinki 2012 program: Suomenlinna, Meeting room of tomorrow, FutuAeroport, Porvoo Campus and Cityshops.

The event ‘Journey through Change’ takes participants through HAAGA-HELIA’s design year. With a boarding pass people will be led through the destinations mentioned above. At the end of this voyage, the traveler will be delighted with Finnish delicacies prepared by chef students of HAAGA-HELIA.

The event will be organized on Monday 26^th November at HAAGA-HELIA’s Haaga campus. It begins at 15:00 and will come to an end at 18:00. It is an open door event, though enrolment is encouraged: http://haaga-helia.etapahtuma.fi, to register use the code ‘WDC’.

-November is the most wonderful time of the year for a design traveler, says Dutchman Niels Klabbers, one of the team members who organize the event.

-'Journey through Change’ combines learning and service design, as it presents several research and development projects. These projects have been done in co-operation with the respective companies, and HAAGA-HELIA students. This unique event is a demonstration of how foreign young people see Finnish design. Design is not only items and articles but also a way of doing things in a user-oriented way, says Elisa Aunola, Chief Coordinator of HAAGA-HELIA’s World Design Capital year.

‘Journey through change’ is organized by the international Degree Program and exchange students of HAAGA-HELIA University of applied sciences.
