A world of activities

Do you feel there’s something missing from your everyday school routines? Do you feel you have extra energy running through your veins, yet you don’t know where to channel it? We have the answer: become active in the student unions! There’s lots of ways to spice up your student life. At the same time, you can gain expertise that will be an asset after graduation. Active student life is demanding yet rewarding, and especially beneficial to the entire student body. Being active means getting involved in organising happenings, establishing contacts with other organisations as well as learning to be creative in handling everyday matters.

Student union HELGA

The student union for all HAAGA-HELIA students is HELGA. In addition, HAAGA-HELIA has several degree programme and unit specific student unions. Together the unions are responsible for our university's student activities. HELGA is responsible, among other things, for the distribution of student cards, student overalls and lockers. The student card SAMOK offers many benefits, e.g. a 50 % discount on long-distance train and bus fares, as well as lots of other local and nationwide discounts. HELGA and the other student unions organise many different kinds of happenings and events, ensuring students can engage in fun and relaxing extra-curricular life.

HELGA also supports international exchange students in adapting to the Finnish way of life. The union organises lots of events for exchange students. Student tutors meet incoming students at the airport, accompany them to their apartments and also help them prepare their study plans.

Tutoring activities

HELGA and academic advisors together organise tutoring for new students. New students are divided into groups headed by a group-specific tutor, to whom the students can turn to for advice on matters big and small, good or bad. The tutors help new students get to a good start in their studies, and know the answers to even the most difficult study-related questions. The tutors have preset consulting hours, but can also be reached just about anytime in the student union or local unit offices.

Degree programme and local unit unions

Each HAAGA-HELIA unit has a local student union office from which student activities are headed. These offices also function as a place to relax and as a living room for all students. Without further ado – walk in the door and join the fun!

The local offices provide students with help and advice on all study-related issues from student grants to parties. They offer members with lots of benefits, e.g. various discounts, events, visits and unforgettable parties. The offices have preset opening hours, but students are encouraged to knock on the door at anytime as it’s likely that there's always someone there.
