Structural change in the higher education system

Structural change bears fruit

The higher education system in Finland is undergoing structural change. The dual model of universities and universities of applied sciences (or polytechnics) will remain, but there will be fewer institutions. Following the mergers at the beginning of 2010, Finland now has 41 institutions of higher education institutions instead of the previous 47. The new network is still one of the most comprehensive higher education structures in Europe.

Today, there are 16 universities in Finland: 10 multi-faculty universities, 2 universities of technology, one school of economics and business administration, and 3 art academies. There are 25 universities of applied sciences.
